using patio sand for drainage

Hello can anyone advice me whether I can use kiln dried patio sand as drainage for my soil

    I needed a small amount of sharp sand yesterday but didn't have any so I raided the bag of kiln dried to mix half and half with some compost to plant a couple of emergency cuttings. It was OK but as Edd said it's much finer

    Thanks for the help. I only have some left over from doing the patio and didnt want to throw it away if I could use it for something else
