Gardener's World programme

DaisydayDaisyday Posts: 373

i really enjoyed Gardener's World as usual last night but I must admit that I was a bit surprised that they featured a gardener who bought seeds back from overseas.i amnot sure that this is a legal thing to do. My search on Google didn't really help much.I go to Spain quite often as my sister has an apartment there and I've often wondered if it would be OK to bring seeds back and felt tempted ! Does anyone have the answer to this conundrum?

    I think if you declare them, it's legal?  My MIL brought me orchid bulbs from some where over seas a number of years ago.

    Legal stuff here, from EU countries no real problems, different rules for commercial importers and non-EU apply and are covered further down the page:

    Travelling from an EU country

    When travelling from a country within the European Union (the “EU”) and certain other countries, you can bring into the UK any plants, seeds, bulbs and similar plant products provided that the following conditions are met:

    • they must have been grown in an EU country or one of the countries treated as an EU country set out in the list below;

    • they must be free from pests and diseases (The Plant Health (England) Order 2005 sets out the types of pests which cannot be lawfully brought into England);

    • they must be for your own personal consumption.

    Commercial importers will be required to obtain a licence before they can import such products into the UK.

  • Hello daydaisy,  I travel to and fro from France, always with plants and seeds, my luggage and car have been checked, but there has never been a problem,  as explained above, as long as it comes from within the EU.  Enjoy your Spanish seeds, I often go to Figueres market and buy plants.

    Thank you all for your responses. It's great that we have such knowledgable people on this forum. I knew you wouldn't let me down!  image

    I watched GW last evening on BBC 2 didn't know it was being shown again.

    One thing that annoys me about some gardening programmes is when they sow seeds they don't show how to water them image It's okay for me I know how to sow tomato seeds but anyone trying for the first time would just follow what was shown and Monty didn't water his image

    IMHO, unless we inspect every single piece of the millions of tons of fruit and vegetables imported into the country every year, seeds are the least of our problems, from EU or anywhere else.

    Just my opinion.

  • I enjoyed the item about chrysanths as it's a project I'm attempting this year:

    Yes, those were amazing.  I didn't even know they existed like that.
