we had a longstanding problem with cats just leaving the poo on the top in our garden and have found that crushed garlic available from Lidl 50p a pot works a treat.Holly round the edges also effective and a chicken wire cage over the top also keeps them off. Also ,and although it doesn't sound very nice but really stinks ,don't put wee on your compost heap, put it in old jam jars around the raised beds. That works! they hate it!
there's a small electric fence energizer called brocot that cost £30 on ebay it will run a 100 mt fence it's powered by a 12volt or 9volt baterey or can be run of a transformer .they do work.
has anyone tried citrus peelings? I have 3 cats who i love dearly but one of them is a bugger for using the raised beds as a giant cat litter tray! he's a particularly tenacious beast who I fear will view any netting as a challenge!!
Thought i'd try the pepper & citrus peel idea but any feedback would be great!
I know how you feel! We used a cat repellent for years that worked, then suddenly it became useless! I read in the paper that finely chopped citrus peel (lemon, orange, grapefruit) worked, so tried it - the results were instantaneous! I use once a week as I use a lot of them. It's environmental friendly and costs nothing! Anything is worth a try.
I would also recommend used coffee grounds - brown like the soil, good for the soil and disliked by cats. You can usually get if free from coffee shops
I have a fruit and vegetable cage, it was free as a result of the maker sending the wrong item when I ordered a taller cage. It keeps blackbirds away. Otherwise they snuffle. I also have a net over another bed. You could try a plastic or wire mesh around the bed. I also have a solar powered sonic animal scarer. I normally get lots of turds In one corner, and there is an animal track in my lawn, from badgers and cats. Since I installed the scarer, there have been no new turds. Only one month, so the jury is out. I had a battery powered one, it worked, but the batteries had to be recharged each month, and the cover was held on with three small screws, since lost. Not good. The solar one is by PestBye, about £12, good value if it does work.
I got one of those solar ultrasonic scarers and it seems to work really well - in fact I went and got another one to protect another part of the garden. I move them around from time to time in order to confound the cats, and to protect whatever seedlings need it most. You can get them on Amazon for about £13.
Thank you to everyone for your ideas. This item has had more than 1300 viewings which shows what an emotive subject it is. FYI, I purchased a Sonic & Flash Animal deterrent for my veg plot from Amazon which is working, however the cats are now using the rest of the garden, so I am going to get another to move around.
Perhaps cat owners could be more responsible and provide somewhere for their cats to poo in their own gardens, or is that asking too much?
BTW Scary Cat plants do not work, a cat pooed right next to mine.
