You can volunteer with the National Trust. I've learnt loads by going on Conservation Holidays with the national Trust for Scotland where you can go for a week to volunteer with a small group in one of their fantastic gardens. I also volunteer once a week in one of the National Trust gardens and am now trusted to prune roses, vines, shrubs, tidy borders, trim lawn edges, pot up and pot on plants, etc. All learnt 'on the job' and for free from some of the best gardeners in the country. If you are really committed and enthusiastic, volunteering with an experienced gardener is the way to go. I'm not so good at studying but there are some basic books which are helpful (as mentioned above by other members) and will keep you right.
