Hostas

Hi first post so be gentle.

I bought some bareroot hostas a while ago and put them in pots indoors.

They have done really well and are all about 12 inches tall now.

When can I put them outside. Would a frost kill them.

I also have an unheated greenhouse, would they be ok in there.

Hostas are hardy and can be left out all year round. But as yours have already been indoors and have leaves earlier than usual I would put them in the unheated greenhouse, but not where they would be scorched by the sun. They prefer a bit of shade.

They'll be fine in the greenhouse - better than indoors - they'll grow soft in the warmth.

Hosta's leaves aren't hardy so May would be the best time to put them out. Mine are in cold frames so a cold GH would be ok. It's not the cold air which kills plants, it's the freezing of leaves which does the damage and that only occurs when they are in direct contact with the frost( unless it's minus 10 or below that is).

  • Thank you all for your help

Will pop them in the greenhouse.
