I've got a David Austen shortish climbing rose on my arbour called Claire Austen which is a heavenly white rose with a hint of lemon in the centre and is scented. Seems disease resistant so far. Another one I like is "Penelope" which is lovely blush apricoty-pink and is scented. I don't think its classed as a climber but I've got it against a wall and it has reached 4 ft so far.

Take a look at Mortimer Sackler, scented grows about 10ft and is almost thornless.  I have it growing either side of an arch and its georgeous.  It's the one in my Avatar.

Have just planted two Claire Austen's in the back garden to grow through obelisks.  Glad to hear I've made a good choice Lizzie.

  • Roses eh? I have just been given one in a pot, no name, for Mother's Day. There is a clue on the tag with the words "Rose Ceramic" and all I can see on a search with this description is, of course, ceramic roses and how to make them!

It is a standard, 20 inches high, with deep pink small flower heads and it might be a Tea Rose. The care instructions say to keep it in a "warm, bright room away from direct sunlight". Usual watering, keeping it moist, and feeding every two weeks. Is that right? Can we have an indoor standard potted rose?

The pot is about 4inches high and 5 inches wide which is placed in a pretty white sculptured plant holder. I would love to be able to put it outdoors, but the tag is clear about it being in a warm bright room and no direct sunshine. How come? I have not seen nor heard of this type of rose before and I have looked on websites for anything like it but had no luck. Can anyone advise me about this please?

  • Thanks guys. I think I will go for a climber, or two, around an arch and something else round the front door. The front of the house is south facing, by the way, so should be ideal for roses - maybe not ideal for Clematis as I think they like their feet in shade? They do well at the present house - which gets morning sun In front.

  • imageOh all right. I just thought that this was a roses in general thread.

I thought about a new thread for my query but then I clicked on the Forum Topics and found this one. I have only posted a few times since signing on.

I'll do my new thread now. Thanks for your advice. image

  • Elizabeth - I heard that roses don't like being indoors. I put two miniatures outside 3 years ago and they do very well, apart from a bit of blackspot. They are very pale pink with rosette shape blooms. Will post a pic. How about putting them in a planter outside when the weather warms up? Maybe during the day to start with if they are used to being inside.

  • Thanks Lyn. I too always thought that roses do not like being indoors. I will try your suggestion when the weather warms up a bit more.
