Leylandii
Good evening. We have had to have 15 mature Leylandii removed from our garden (recently moved in and trees have been allowed to dangerously outgrow the area they were in) and the stumps have been ground out. The soil looks poor and I am winderring now what we can plant instead. We would like a full hedge to grow in due time, but we really dont know what would tolerate the poor soil, the area has full sun from around 11 - 4 . thanks in advance for any advice????

I have a long run to do where Leylandii were. Still got the stumps to remove. I'm thinking I'm going to remove the soil and replace it. Years of debris from the conifers has left it dark but dead looking. I haven't tested it, but I think it may be quite acidic.
I was going to dig it out, perhaps even use in it in tubs for acid lovers, and replace with fresh soil. Then the choice of what goes in is only down to preference and imagination.
That's my plan for a similar area, Verdun, except that I'm not even going to attempt to dig it over yet, just smother it in good stuff!
I have found that plants do well in soil exposed by removing Leylandii, I removed a large Leylandii hedge last year & everything I planted looks really good, nothing added in terms of fertiliser.
Looks from the above posts Jan that your question is going to save me from having to dig out a lot of soil
Dont despair of a conifer hedge, this is mine, I know several regulars have seen these piccy before, but just to show what can be done in a very short time. the only things I bought for this was a couple of tubs of chicken pellets, BOGOF. I bought 12 bare root shrubs, 20.00 from Amazon and I bought the asters and some Penstemon bare roots in the winter, of which I have now taken loads of cutting for this year. If you have the time to spend it will reward you.
starting to dig out Oct 13
