Composting bark

Hi Can anyone tell me if its worth composting bark chippings to use as a mulch? If so what would I add to them?

Thanks

I'd layer it up with grass clippings and leave it for about 6 months.

I get chippings from a local tree surgeon and that's how it treat it.

    Devon.

I used to work in an area where the local council had a huge dump of chipped bark it must have been at least 500 cubic metres in volume, I used to help myself to bags of the stuff and it was hot I mean very hot I was concerned that it would burst into flames in the back of the van. I spread this all over my garden to keep the weeds down but after a year it had disappeared into the ground. I think that the secret may be to have a huge pile of chipped bark to get it to start composting.

  • Thanks folks I don't have a huge amount so I'll put some grass cuttings with it and give it a go
