Spray with soapy water rose, they hate it. No need for chemicals, a few drops in a spray bottle and they soon go. Or get Lacewing larvae natural predators. You will need to spray anyway with soapy water or you'll get sooty mold. Roses look daft covered in bubbles but it works.

thanks Dave, I would like lacewings and ladybirds, our garden is pretty wildlife friendly, but last year saw few ladybirds, maybe the'yre spoiled as we're 1 minute across the road from botanical gardens!!

Provide them with winter hibernation places rose, have already seen them in my garden on sunny days, but not far from the bug house and leaf/stick piles.

loads of leaf piles, i left 2 piles of pruning over autumn/ winter, haven't got a bug house yet, must do, they seem to come in the house in winter, what's the best thing to do with them? if they're out of reach i leave them but if not i've been putting in plants in porch

For lacewings get 2 litre plastic pop bottles and cut off the ends. Then roll up corrugated cardboard to stuff tightly inside. You want the corrugations showing at the ends. Put somewhere where the cardboard will stay dry. I had thousands of whitefly in one of my composters a month ago. Hope it is not a sign of a bad year ahead with them.

My lean-to, which I use for growing on plants, was infested last year.  I haven't had whitefly like that before.  Was it a particularly bad year?  i assume they have laid eggs and I will have a problem again this year.  Is there anything I can do?
