They normally have the variety named on the packet

  • Actually, many everyday chillies and tomatoes don't have the name of the variety on the packet. It's quite likely to be something vague like 'Medium Red Chillies' or 'Salad Tomatoes' or 'Cherry Tomatoes'.

TX, if you're more specific, someone might know or be able to hazard a guess or suggest a similar variety.

Or you could email customer services at the relevant supermarket. I have got some interesting answers when I've emailed similar enquiries.

I'll name the good ones that gave transparent replies, Lidl and Sainsburys.

One of the others just gave me some guff about commercially confidential information.

If proprietary varieties, they won't divulge information. They're closely guarded secrets. I know a couple of American growers with way too much time on their hands who like to dehybridise these varieties to work out their heritage. They've found up to four or five different parents in the mix.

  • If you like them, try growing the seed taken from the fruits.. This won't always work but might be worth a go
