Fire ash
We have a real fire in our house that we light most days. We burn coal and logs. I usually empty the grate and put it in the council 'compostable waste bin' as I don't have a compost heap. Do you think the ash could be applied direct to my soil as a form of fertiliser?

You can use wood ash from the logs on your garden but avoid using ash from coal as that can be harmful to the soil. You should really put coal ash in your general waste bin and not into the compostable waste bin:

Thank you Bob The Gardener - Did not know that! The link was very helpful thanks.
I shall make sure it goes into the household waste in future as I rarely burn logs without coal.
