Grass cuttings

We have got quite a shaded area in our garden next to trees on our neighbouring property but the grass obviously isn't great. It is such a large area to re turf or seed is there any way of trying to encourage growth there? I have read that leaving your grass cutting on the lawn encourages growth and gives nutrients to the lawn. If we scatter grass cutting in that area from the mower is this likely to encourage growth? I know that In the past if I have strimmed next to the flower beds and not cleared any of the grass up it tends to germinate creating weeding!! Being a shaded area which once the trees are blossoming in the Spring Summer it will get even more shady, so spending money on this area is a bit of a waste.

Grass seed isn't that expensive emma. Leaving clippings in an area won't give you new grass, but it may improve the soil. If you want grass in the shaded area, buy seed suitable for shaded area's. It's widely available (amazon), and sow the area. Now is the perfect time to start and if done properly you could have a lovely grassy area by mid summer.

Thank you. However time is an issue too. We have very mixed results with seed. We have raked the area and it looks heaps better but no where near good enough for laying grass seed and it is requiring a lot of work to get it to the standard required to sowing grass seed. I am hoping that by raking all the old fallen leaves and twigs it will help the ground get some light.
