Bramble!

minxyminxy Posts: 8

I wonder if anyone has an easy solution for getting rid of bramble or deterring it.

on the other side of my fence, at the top end of my garden, is fields - there are lots of bramble bushes and for the last 12 years I've dug the roots out, I've dug a trench just in front of my fence and set concrete (as a barrier) and I've tried root out (maybe that didn't work because I covered it so nothing could get to it)

the only advice I've had from a friend is to burn them image which I don't want to do

if I spend money on concrete or slabs, I want to make sure that will work or is there an easier way?

thank you

If you can't dig them out just keep cutting them off at the base.

Cut it back along a strip about three feet wide and then when it regrows spray the new growth with SBK brushwood killer.  This will deter it and give you a 'no man's land' you can aim to keep clear.  Then make sure that you keep cutting it back so that none of the long whippy stems of new growth can touch the ground.  If they touch the ground they will root and grow into new bushes - that's how they're moving forward and invading your space.  If you keep cutting it back it will stay where it is and not move forward.

Brambles are a wonderful habitat for lots of wildlife - birds and small mammals are safe in there from sparrowhawks and cats, hedgehogs hibernate under a bramble bush,  and their flowers and fruits are a rich food source for many insects and birds so keeping them under control is far preferable to wiping them out.

KEF image mint don't work !!!! image lol

Dovefromabove image I love the wildlife and the bramble is ok on the other side of my fence ... BUT! lol I have grown to hate it on my side of the inside of the fence - I have a 4 to 5 foot gap between the fence where I can plant because i have to dig all the time ... I would love something like cherry trees or big sunflowers (not much difference lol) along the back but all I keep getting is the bloomin brambles image

a few years back I got really frustrated and angry (I am a woman after all image) so I mixed SBK with rootout and pathclear ... I only sprayed a little patch but it killed everything in that patch ... 6 months on, the bramble came back image

I guess I'm stuck with them image ... I will take your advice and keep it controlled ... thank you image

sorry for the over use of smiles ......... I love them! haha
