Date palms
in Plants
Hi gardeners want some advice please. I fancy putting a date palm in a nice sunny part of my border in my garden. How easy are they to look after and do they establish themselves quite quickly? Any advice very welcome x

Canary Island Date Palm might fit the bill and is fast growing. Not fully hardy so will possibly need some winter protection.
My friend in Perth, western Australia had a date palm. It had a trunk 4ft wide. It used to attract the galahs, who made a dreadful noise at 4am. It had to be pruned with a chainsaw to get individual dead leaves off. The council did not like taking the leaves away because they are so tough, spiky, and take too long to rot. In that climate, I would stick to Citrus trees and bougainvillea.
The key is protecting it in a sunny spot out of prevailing winds. Think south facing front garden with a wall on front and an evergreen hedge on either side, house behind. I have seen large CIDP in London and a few other places with that set up.
I have a few palms of different varieties and they are all in pots so I can contain them better
The advantage of that is that I can move them in the winter or when they are about to be battered by the wind
