Dividing Aubretia

JoneskJonesk Posts: 205

Good evening all,

I have 3 clumps of Aubretia that I planted last year. I didn't cut them back after flowering last year as I wasn't aware until last week that I should! 1 clump seems to have died but the others are OK. They already have lots of buds so I don't want to cut them back right now. The stems are a good 20cm long in places and a little straggly.

I was wondering if it was OK to divide Aubretia? Also wondering if any of the long stems may 'root' if pegged down? Any other tips on the best way to propagate this plant?

Thanks in advance image

I haven't grown aubrieta for ages but I don't think it divides, have a look at the middle underneath, if there's just one stem coming up, you can't divide. and I don't remember it rooting down

    But you can take cuttings

It does root as it goes, I've had some huge clumps that have rooted along the stems. I wouldn't expect young plants from last year to have done this yet, though. I would give pegging down a try using your long stems.

I shoved a couple of cut stems in some mpc and although it took a couple of months, they formed small plants. It seems to be quite slow growing though so you might just want to buy a few more plants, they were 3 for £5 at the range.

  • I brought some Aubretia plantlets over from my friend's garden in France - it had self- seeded all over their gravel path. All the plantlets survived and have grown into enormous clumps. I have also managed to pot up a section of my main clump as I am moving and want to take some with me. Depends how big the main root is and if there are enough root 'threads' on it I suppose. I think you could peg some down as some of my long stems have attached themselves to the earth in the flower bed.

Thank you everybody for your suggestions image

I think 'll cut 2 back after flowering to keep them neat and growing strong and have a go at pegging 1 back this year and see what happens!

I'll keep a look out for some cheap plants/seeds if I come across any but trying to save my spends for new varieties - perhaps I'll give Aldi a whirl!
