cutting uneven lawn/grass

Hi there! Number one son's new garden is undulating rough grass we have been given the job of tidying it up. We thought of grazing their ponies but not sure the landlord will like that.
would a conventional flymo type mower do the job? Or has anyone used a rotary one without smashing the blade to bits.? We have a strimmer but oh what a job.l

Hi
Are you saying the grass is undulating or the ground beneath
if it is the ground it could be that the ground underneath. was not prepared properly
ie large stones not removed when preparing the ground to take the new lawn. if it is
then, not all is lost. Cut and take up the lawn where the ground is uneven, inspect the area and level out and relay the lawn
if the lawn is just overgrown and needs cutting then I would strim the high areas of grass and then set the mower cut at the highest level and cut away
it might require scarifying ( racking over to remove moss etc) and then re-aeration using a fork or a hollow tine fork to create draining holes to releive compact areas and get water and air to the roots
You could then top dress the lawn using a combination of seivied soil and sharp sand and brush this in to the holes made by the tine fork
Finally, reseed areas after scarifying process and you should get your lawn back to an acceptable level
If it is very rough hire a brush cutter and take it down with that
Thanks guys ,
never thought of a brush cutter. I perhaps Will have a go with one of those first and then it might show up what we are up against, and then follow your guide Steve.
will let you know how we get on.
