Has anyone grown water melon in the UK

I love nice red (low seeded) water melon and just wondered how easy it is to grow in the UK.

  • Fair point... thanks for that...he does appear however to have treated them like his children,  in terms of time and cost you could make the same point about many fruits and veg's we grow in the garden which can be produced more cheaply and extensively by agribusiness for supermarkets, but then again thats why I want to grow my own.

I don't think they would be easy at all.. and am a bit dubious to how sweet they will be, assuming you get one to ripen.  Give it a try though.. if the UK has a good summer then you may be in luck!  image

Do you have a green house or a poly-tunnel?  I think that would improve your chances.  Do some experimentation.  A packet of seeds is the cheap investment.. and if you have the space and time, then not much is lost.

I had a go a few years back....failed! But that was before i really knew which bits of mt garden were best, they were easy to germinate and bring on, just like squash as you would expect, they will need some protection and a reasonable summer, but do-able, probably easier than sweet potatoes in my opinion image

I've got a free packet with a magazine. Was going to try them in a sunny porch which gets quite hot in the summer. image

..many years ago, I grew melons in my greenhouse in Cornall, in the soil border... can't remember the variety, might have been cantaloupe or galia type.... I must have grown from seed and they were easy to grow on and train up canes, but the fruits need support with special netting which you can buy... the fruits developed into a good size by late summer and were edible but not very sweet, and not very nice to be perfectly honest..... not enough sun and warmth to ripen fully....

  • So much depends on the weather and position Salino... I read this

and then popped out to get a few seeds may as well give it a go, it we get a summer like last year theres a fair chance...
