How to mulch my asparagus??

Hello,
Last year I took on my first allotment which has two large asparagus beds (10 year & 4 Year old beds). They are quite large - 5m x 2m & 5m x 1.5m.
Does anyone know how best to mulch them as weeds are a problem. I have done my best by hand but as I understand it asparagus needs a good mulch every year or two.
Ideally looking for a way to mulch well without costing too much.

I have heard wood chips or bark chips might be ok?
The seaside would be nice but it's a bit far and would make for a very smelly car!
Looks like I'll be using straw as I can buy bales for just a few pounds each.
