troublesome felines!
in Talkback
Hi there,
Can anyone suggest ways to deter the local cat population from using my newly dug flowerbeds as their toilet please?
Thank you

Lots of threads here http://www.gardenersworld.com/search/cat/ - you'll find some of them get quite heated.

They work.
Thank you.
Buy a gun only joking, I found chilly or garlic paste diluted in water and sprayed on seems to keep them off.
I found the best method was just staking the area with sticks at various that would prevent them getting on the soil. We used (clean) BBQ kebab sticks.
On Pinterest I saw someone used plastic forks pushed into the soil, tines up. I thought a couple of stainless steel sets from Poundland or a pile from a charity shop would look better.. and once your plants are grown in they would be hidden among the foliage.
I've used garlic salt to good effect although you do have to refresh it each day for a few days after which the cats leave well alone and don't return. It's really just a question of changing their habit - if they hate the smell, they quickly know to give that area a wide berth.
Thank you every one for your ideas. Let the battle commence!
wish I had £1 for everyone asking for help with deterring cats.
We have problems with cats, there are almost as many of them in the close as there are houses and they all seem to use our garden as a litter tray. I've been using sticks shoved into the ground on the borders at the back, and liberally scattering curry powder on the stones at the front. I need to add a few more sticks as it hasn't been perfect in saving the beds, but like the fork idea, and the rain does wash away the curry powder but it seems to work for a month or so before the blighters come back.
