Lily of the valley

How deep should Lily of the valley be planted, do I cover the little shoots?" Pots or would ground be best?

    Hi primrosecottage

I always soak the roots for a short while before planting lily of the valley and then cover with a small amount of soil/compost - they like it quite gritty.  The shoot should be poking through.  They'll grow either in pots or in the garden.  I have mine growing in both but the beauty of growing in the pots is that you can place them where you get the full scent and then they can be moved to a sheltered spot after they finish flowering and left to die down naturally.  They do well being pot bound and can be given a feed each Spring.  I have mine in a variety of different sized pots ranging from 4 - 8 inches.  I covered each with a layer of pea gravel to keep in the moisture.  In the soil it can be difficult to plant other things near them later on as the roots are quite shallow and easily damaged.  They'll also grow into everything once they get established in the garden.  Hope this helps.image
