Elaeaghus ebbingel Holy Olive

I have 3 Holy olive shrubs that are about 15 years old. They started having leaf curl on single branches which then turns brown and starts again on another branch. It only happens on one side which faces north east and a public footpath. Please help.

Is the soil very wet? They like well drained soil. They also prefer sun and I see that it's the north east side that is affected. Has it been colder than usual this winter where you are?

The soil is very dry with mature trees (oak)near by .We are half a mile from the coast in north Wales. The winter has been very mild. The other side is in the shade all day. The problem mainly happens in the summer.

2 of mine do this, bits die back. I've always put it down to the rubbishy soil they're in.

Interestingly I have one that never does die back, it's the one in the most shaded spotimage The 'soil' is largely brick rubble with the odd plastic fertilizer sack thrown in.

My garden was used as a tip for years before our arrival

PS, didn't know they were called holy olive. Are the berries edible?

Thank you both for your help. It looks like soil conditions etc., not disease, thankfully.image
