Can anybody tell me what plant this is. It came up in our garden last year. The blooms only last a day .....

    That's a Tigridia.   Bee-yew-tiful.

    Should be a bit more specific, Tigridia Pavonia, grows from a bulb, loves the sun.   Each flower lasts one day, as you have noted, but another bud is just behind that flower, on the same stem, so don't cut it off.   I used to grow them from seed, in a warmer climate!   Haven't tried it here yet.
