I've never grown dahlias before but I picked up some tubers at Wilkos. I thought I'd put them in containers as I don''t know where in my borders I want them. They are Topmix. How big a pot do I need if I put one tuber per container?
The key as Verdun says, is repotting frequently. Small plants in large pots do not do well.
If I am going to leave some in pots, I make sure that the compost in the final potting on, is rich and moisture retentive. They are greedy plants [ just like me ]

HI I haven't potted up my Dahlias yet, they are still in the loft as it's still pretty cold here in Glasgow. I use a variety of sizes and some are huge as I've had most of them for about 6 yrs or so. I would advise plastic pots though as last year I used some terracotta and ceramic pots because I needed really big pots over 12", but when I was taking them out of their pots to plant in garden quite a lot of the fine roots stuck to the pots. Although they did all flower beautifully I'm not sure if it did them any good. I absolutely love Dahlias. My husband made me some veg beds a few years ago but I kept one for some of my Dahlias and have a great display when they all flower.

I put one tuber per 12 inch pot, particularly as there are big dahlias and small dahlias and you prob wont know which you've got till they grow.

Potted up all my Dahlias today. Some had to go in pretty large 10inch pots as the tubers were so big. Beautiful and Sunny though at around 12c.
Long may this continue
I have the white Topmix. They don't get very big so pots are absolutely fine for them. ps, the bees adore them.
I started to "water" my dahlias in the tunnel yesterday. Just a little for now to get them going.
