I find a lot of invasive plants are difficult to get started. Jap anemones have never got established here (I still have hope and the space). Chinese lanterns were also slow to take.
I too regret planting the pink form of Japanese A about 12 years ago. I am still trying to get rid of them and have more or less given up hope. I just remove as many as I can when I see them. The white form however is much less invasive and in fact I would like them to bulk up a little. (Be careful what you wish for!)
Wow, I love these plants and have been trying hard to establish some in my garden for years, but haven't had much luck so far! Don't throw them out - send some my way - I'll refund postage
I wish mine were a bit more invasive. I want plants which flower reliably in the autumn and I've seen them at Sissinghurst and at other places, with roses and other perennials. Beautiful!
i have them, i like them but they have such a lot of foliage and shade a lot of my other planrs put, i've dug uop a few and moved some right to the bask of my beds, i tinherited them and think they're pretty established, i've been out today digging and trying to clear space for philaedelphus , viburnum and obviously 3 more roses... the ja will just have to grow around these!

Don't try too hard you might live to regret it.
