Which plants for under an oak tree?

what can I plant under and around a huge oak tree?  The soil is clay, gets very dry in summer and the area gets boiling Hot sheltered afternoon sun in summer....; this area is proving to be very difficult!

    Hi, we have 3 huge oak trees at the end of our garden but choisya, skimmia, dicentra and holly all grow there quite happily. Hope this helps

    Thanks.  Will the skimmiia cope with very hot afternoon sun do you think?  I think the Choisia is a good idea.....

    Sounds as though you need a tough ground cover plant that doesn't mind drought or shade - like periwinkle, or geranium macrorrhizum.

    I said shade, but now I've taken in that you said sun, the plants I mentioned should be OK with sun or shade - but I'm wondering why sun? Surely the oak tree will make shade under it?
