dampening off

I have started to grow some cosmos and zinnia in heated propagator, the leaves have gone mushy and they are wilting. How do I stop this from happening to my other seeds?

Sow thinly, water from below and if you can get hold of some Copper sulphate water with that. If not then try gently dusting the soil surface with a little powdered cinnamon.

Mulch with perlite helps. Are you leaving the lid on the propagator? If it has any moisture on the walls or roof of the propagator then you have too much water, so cut it down and open the lid/get rid of it.

According to the instructions I received with my heated propagator you are recommended to open the aerator on  the lid gradually as soon as the seeds begin to germinate in order to reduce the amount of condensation on the lid and finally remove from the heat and then remove the lid.  I followed the advice and havent had to add anything to the soil all have germinated and seem fine at the moment.  The seeds took a couple of days to germinate and I removed them from the heat a day later, the lid came off the following day.  I am now standing the tray on capilliary matting on the window ledge.

Thanks for the advice. This will make my life so much easier and less stressful. I am daft,I feel sorry for seedlings that die and suppose want them all to survive just in case some are eaten by slugs, vine weevil etc.
