Scarifying: what is it?

After scarifying we use Westland feed, weed and moss killer. Never needed to reseed.

A good tip is to give the lawn a feed only, then weed and feed four or five weeks later. It gives the grass a boost, and although it means the weeds start going too, it also means the weed and feed has more to work on and is more effective  imageimage

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

  • Thanks again.

My lawn care company haven't turned up this year, presumably because when they rang me to ask whether I wanted them to scarify and aerate at a cost of about 200 quid,  I politely declined and told them that I would do the aerating myself using a hand tool. Blooming hard work, particularly as there appears to be rubble just under the surface in some parts of the lawn.

If I remember rightly, their first treatment last year consisted of a spray application to kill the moss, followed by a granular feed which was applied across the lawn with one of those hand held spreader thingies, so I'm planning to do something similar.

I'd already bought some Evergreen soluble Mosskil and applied that by spray a week or so ago before I read your advice, Fairygirl. The moss has now gone black and looks ready for scarifying. Should I scarify now before applying a granular feed, or wait a bit longer?
