disappearing daffodils?

in Plants
two years ago I turned my new front garden (which was a boring lawn) into a wildflower meadow, I planted crocus and daffodils under the wildflower meadow to give some early spring colour.
The crocuses have come up great the last two years and the daffs flowered great last spring, but this year nothing, not even leaves in most cases. they were planted at the right depth and they didn't get cut back because the wildflower meadow was growing by that point.
any ideas what's happened? I even checked to make sure that they hadn't been dug up and pinched!

Last year was very dry and daffodils do like a good soaking every now and then ...?
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
It is possible they bloomed well the first year from the old bulb, only to be skipping this year due to the original stress of transplantation.
I'm not sure if this is the case whether they will recover for next year. They need the leaves each year to provide the vigour to the bulbs for flowering the following year. Perhaps someone with better knowledge will step in, but this fits the pattern of good blooms the first year and a poor show this year.
haven't dug up any, just tried to find the holes if something/someone had dug them up.
its not squirrels as im in a housing estate with no woodland nearby.
they might have got dry I suppose? but I did water during really dry spells?
i'll just have to wait till next year and see if any pop up, if not i'll buy some more bulbs.
