When you buy clematis, you should notice they are in quite deep pots. To stop clematis wilt, plant at least 2 inches deeper that the nursery line, even planting some of the leaves. Then you do not have to cover the root base with nothing other than a good mulch of horse manure. Feed and water with Tomo rite or high potassium feed during growing season.
I cut back all clematis straight after flowering now no matter what, including the huge Montana Clems, unless you know they have two flowering times a year, then cut back after last one. I have never lost a clem yet if you plant properly and feed correctly.
I always prune them back and this is the first year they have not flowered, the one I moved has put out 2 new leaves already so have cut back the dead parts and keeping my fingers crossed that it will do better in the new position
Keep well watered and give it some liquid tomato food too. Clematis are hungry, thirsty plants and can take a year or two to get their roots established. One that's just been moved will need extra care.
