A friend used to cut her Iris unguicularis right back after flowering. I've never done that, I thought it would need its leaves. They are very tatty though.
I was pondering the same actually nut. One of my customers has one. RHS says cut back after flowering. The customer isn't worried about it so I may go for it. They do look tatty as you say. Nowt to lose as they are hardy perennials.
Thanks Dave, you just get more and more dead leaves over the years and they don't pull off easily like most dead leaves. Maybe that's all non-bulbous irises, the pseudocorus have very tough dead leaves as well.
Mine had a hair cut 2 years ago when we painted the outside of the house and they look better for it. I don't want to weaken the plant by doing it too often.
