A dark blue stain would look amazing and beautiful, without standing out like a 'sore thumb'.  That's my plan, for when I eventually build my own.

Personally I like black as a background to green foliage - looks quite contemporary and a bit oriental!

Sadolin (Classic?) wood stain (green tin) is available in several colours including ebony. Best bought from a builder's merchant. It is expensive but is an excellent product and was recommended for protecting our timber clad (barn conversion) house. 30 years on the house is still weather tight and no sign of timber rotting. (Being a house it was recoated about every 7 years)

If you were to do 2 coats now (better still make it 3) you would not have to worry about it again for 10 years - probably longer. Any of the cheaper fencing stains sold in the chain DIY stores will probably fade or start to flake after a couple of years & then you will face the dilemma of cutting your plant back to restain - or letting the pergola take it's chance.

Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down

Perki, why did you build the pergola? Do you want a restful place to sit or a focal point, its really down to personal choice, for me everything is painted white, i know thats not everyones cup of tea, but i find it uplifting and clean looking especially against a blue sky image

Whats your favorite colour, what do you think would make you smile whenever you look at it? image

Thanks for the feedback everyone  image

I built the pergola for somewhere to sit and I love wisteria. It gets sun all day there as well so a bit of shade would do nicely  image

I would think the treated wood would last a least 10years, But extra protection would  better to repel the water, it seem to soak the water up.

I looked at Sadolin classic its about £20 per litre online, I went to B&Q yesterday couldnt make my mind up what to get. I dont know how much I need buying one tin not to bad but 2 or 3 starts getting expensive.

I got a liguria rocket somewhere i think it look well against the dark coloured shed.

Perki, dunno if this helps much, i painted my arbour with one tin of paint from woodland trust colours, still got about a third left from a 2.5lt tin, reckon a tin that size would easily do your pergola image

Been busy today staining my pergola light oak image what you think ?  its only the first coat but it took 3 half hours.  I hate painting its so boring. Two more coats to go image

I got a climbing rose Arthur bell to plant on one side, I think I put a clematis on the same pergola leg as well. My wisteria Prolific has flowered, second year I have had it.  Saved me some money were going to buy one already flowering for £50

Growing some sweet peas just for this year on them cheap nasty trellis on the side of shed, I was think of planting  a winter jasmine but tempted at trying a kiwi plant for side of shed.

Just need a bench now to place underneath pergola and get my plants inimage

Thanks Runnybeak , I want it to be like a little hide away where I can have a cuppa image so I got some  verbena bonarises to plant there to give some height but I can still see through it so I can see rest of garden.

It's looking lovely Perki.  I hate painting too but it's worth it in the end.

I think you've chosen the right colour. If it were dark it would disappear in front of the shed so you couldn't see it from a distance.
