All you need is the growing tip with a few buds and some roots.  Haul out all the rest of the 'trunks' and dispose of them.  They aren't really much use for anything.

Thanks one and all. Last question, when is the best time to do this? I'm reckoning now, am I right?

yes now is the best time to lift and divide as they are currently dormant, you can almost treat water lily's as a herbaceous perennial really.

its also going to be unbelievably stinky, and the smell wont wash out of your skin on the first attempt either!

Good luck with them Hostafan, I think you'll be pleased with the results when they come back with nice strong leaves and lovely flowers. image

I hope so Gemma. They're both pink ( one pale , one darker ) and so beautiful.

Help! It is now August and my poor water Lilly is floating around the pond. Originally it was planted in a container but despite having a firm in last year to clean the pond my water lily is a sad specimen without flowers. What do I do?

elastic band a rock to it and sink it, the roots do not like floating in water
