who/what has been eating my Red Robin leaves?

Spotted this the other day when we didn't have snow n' actually had a nice day, the leaves of my red robin have been cut/eaten can anyone tell me the culprit?
I looked under every leaf and couldnt find anything. I was thinking caterpillar (but thought it was too early for them) maybe Ants? as last year i did see one in my black beauty tree looking after the black aphids, or would it be bees, but again is it not a bit early for them?
Also are some of the leaves ment to have dark patches on them?
Thanks as always guys

this plant is prone to getting a fungus it may be the dark marks
Looks like Weevil damage to me. It's not likely to be frost, wind or fungal damage, the marks are definitely eaten. Snails can do this damage but they can also eat holes at the centre of leaves as well as the edges whilst weevils only go from the edges. Since it's this time of year, I would hazard one of these culprits or both
Thanks everyone, When are Weevils likely to start again? and is there an eco friendly-ish way of dealing with them? Does anything eat these guys?
I've used Nemasys Vine Weevil nematodes with good results.
