Fruit tree pruning
I have two old apple trees in my garden which have produced very little fruit since moving to the house two years ago. They were pruned before we moved in and I haven't done anything to them, they have lots of vertical shoots and I'm not sure when or even how I should prune them. Any advice would be appreciated.

wow, definitely a long term plan - thank you for the advice. Is it OK to start this year (in the next couple of weeks?)
They might be past their best cropping-wise, but they'd look fabulous with Clematis montana or a rampant rambling rose growing through them

Ellie ,just to add to the bad news ,before you decide just check how the full leafed tree might effect the greenhouse for light etc, maybe this was the reason for the dismemberment that Dove talked about, also removing and planting new might be good, left in cut off trunks can make nice features for birdbaths etc if a full dig is too much at this time. good luck Ell

The best bet is to remove the old trees and replace with your favorite variety of apple tree. Use half standard so that they will be easy to maintain and easy to pick the fruit .also they won't block the light in your greenhouse.
Thanks for all the advice, I wondered if it was a bit of a lost cause. I think i'll replace them.
