so glad to see that no-one has advocated the Monty Don ( organic ) approach. He is on record on saying " the jewel garden was overun with bindweed and we had to dig it all up and start again" or words to that effect. I don't advocate chemicals as the first line of defence , but sometimes, there is no alternative.
I dont mind digging bindweed roots up, but like wintersong, mine is growing in lovely light soil (The only nice bit of soil in the garden! ) I might be a no weed killer girl, but even i would be very tempted if an entire garden was full of it
As far as digging up the jewel garden goes, good on him for trying to do it right, but i would imagine that unless the soil was removed then sieved back in, it would take more than one year to really clear, you would have to have the patience of a saint!
Hi DeeBee and others, I concur that digging is pointless, I would also recommend the Roundup Gel. My garden was similar to your own and after trying many things, the gel was the best, applied last year in the summer when the bindweed leaves were big and lush. The spray can catch other plants and if you have bind weed amongst many other plants you want to keep, then it can be hit and miss. The gel I found was not as effective whilst smearing it on the top side of the leaf, but if you applied it to both sides, the bindweed does not fight back. I have cleared my shady corner of bindweed growing up my honeysuckle for the first time in 10 years. Woohoo!!

How many of us can afford the time , effort ,and expense of digging up our gardens ?
He's paid to tend his garden and he really needs a few problems to connect with his audience and fill the slot with content
