Aralia, how to propagate by suckers

Has anyone propagated Aralia by lifting one of the many suckers it throws up? Thanks.

  • Thanks, Philippa; however, I've never removed suckers from a shrub before; I did try with one small sucker from the Aralia but it just seemed to break off, and there was no sign of a root attached. Is there a trick to it; also, is there a right time of year to do it?

some suckers appear above ground before the roots are formed. I don't know about aralia, I haven't had one since moving here.

Have a bit of a dig down and see if your chosen sucker has a root system before you cut it off.

What Aralia are you talking about specifically? Am guessing Aralia spinosa or elata but Fatsia and many others have been called Aralia so it can get confusing.

  • I don't know which Aralia it it ( it's an inherited garden, and I'm trying to preserve it...)

Does the trunk have spikes on it?

  • Sorry for the time lapse; yes, it does have spikes, with great big leaves and white flowers with long (not sure what the right term is...), not flat flowers but long ones, if that's any clue... thanks!
