Help with hebes

a1154a1154 Posts: 1,108

One of you kind people suggested hebes for a spot in my garden, but now i have come to choose them its a bit overwhelming - can someone give me a crash course? They arent all everygreen are they? Some seem v compact and low growing, others taller and more spreading.

i have a list of types my garden centre can get and its a long list.

Its for a slopy bit of garden id like to plant up and then not have to bother with too much.  I need good doers, its a bit windy.  I want evergreen, I'd prefer taller ones if they do OK in the wind, and if there are several that go well together id be interested in getting a few diffent ones.  Nice flowers would be great too!

I have lots of dwarf ones and to be honest i do minimal maintainence on them. They seem really hardy and evergreen although some of my hebes change colour to a sort of pinky purple colour over winter so add a bit of interest over winter.

Many of the newer varieties are not reliably hardy below -5C, so choose carefully.

Ooo. Not been really cold for a couple of years, but have seen -15 here.  Got good drainage and full sun though.
