What flowers to grow?

LalatLalat Posts: 29

Hi guys,

I normally just grow fruit and vegetables but this year I've made room for a few flowers, what should I grow? On 'The Big Allotment Challenge'  (BBC 2) I saw them growing zinnias and larkspur I thought these flowers looked really nice. Are there any other flowers for a novice to grow?

Thanks in advance,

Lalat.

  • Most annuals are as easy as anything, have more confidence in yourself, growing decent veg is far more involved than flowers! image

Do you want them for cutting or do you just want them to brighten up your patch? image

Can't go far wrong with cosmos I think - easy to grow, look good and can cut them as well.

I also grow French marigolds and plant them in blocks rather than the traditional line- this year have some ones called 'Red Cherry' - also easy to grow and attract beneficial insects.

Larkspur can be tricky - in fact I have just read that putting seeds in a freezer for a week can help germination - I have a packet so will give it a go.

Zinnias are supposed to be easy - also trialing them this year

  • GW mag this month comes with free seeds of zinnias, there are so many different flowers that are easy to go antirrhinum come in all colours, sweet peas

I am going to try larkspur this year they do look pretty

  • Calendula  are dead easy to grow and if you choose a tall one they are even better for picking. Echium Blue bedder is not so much for picking but it puts on a good show and goes well with calendula. The flowers also change colour from blue to pinky when the weather is going to change! Don't have much experience with zinnias as they hate to get cold and where I live is not the warmest!
