HELP! Akebia Quinata gone wild.

I've started to clear my mums garden and the Akebia Quinata is everywhere. It was planted about 20 years ago and now and it's runners now cover an area of about 20x20 metres. Please could I have some advice on how to permanently remove it. Thanks

I have an Akebia Quinata in my garden.  I currently keep it uunder control but will be interested ot hear others experience of the plant and how much of a thug it can become.  I'm trying not to plant any plants that 'take over' as in the future I may not be able to be particularly active in the garden.
