come on Lyn, we love the progress shots. Keep your chin up. It'll be fab once you work your magic on it.

    Devon.
  • There are plastic grids you can buy that help hold the gravel in place.  Not tried it yet but I might get some for my gravel drive.  A landscape gardener I know also said to buy chippings rather than pebble-shaped gravel as the round pebble-like gravel tends to disappear more quickly.

  • That's interesting. The gravel I intend to use (the same as in my present garden)  is 20mm from Wickes - actually from Yeovil as it is a pale whiteish beige rather than the local multicoloured mainly brown colour. The pieces are fairly irregular, although not exactly sharp chippings. I have seen the grid base to go under gravel - unfortunately it seems to gradually show through in places. A property nearby has the resin based fine gravel drive and path, which looks very smart but probably cost megabucks. image

  • Beware of laying gravel over concrete - my brother had a large area of gravel laid over a hard surface - it will move underfoot - one day his foot slipped on the gravel and he broke his ankle in two places - no joke for a man in his 50s - 8 years on he still has trouble with it.  Seek advice from someone - don't know who but there must be safer options! image

I think once you've been in the house a while, your imagination will take flight! You made a wonderful job of your old garden.

Thanks for your kind words and encouragement! I am quite looking forward to the challenge.  Will post some progress pics as the project develops.
