Daphne is too big for her boots!

I have two fabulous daphne bushes in the garden, planted about 10 years ago.  They are the stars of the show at this time of year, absolutely covered in bloom and pumping out delicious fragrance that fills the whole garden.  The problem is that they have now outgrown their space - they are about 7 foot high and four foot across.  I need to reduce them - certainly reduce their height.

Can anyone advise on how best to go about it, without losing too much of next years flower?

Daphne, don't like being pruned, a light prune after flowering is all thats advised. If you prune too hard you may get die-back so it's a tough decision for you. I'd cut a maximum of six inches off and see what happens but no more.

Thanks both.  Hmmm....that doesn't sound too good!

Variety - I think - is daphne odoro (possibly Jacqueline Postill?)

    Hello Rosie image

JP  does get big if it's happy.  It's D. bholua, JP.

Daphne odora I've never seen at 7 foot. Mine went sideways rather than up for 10 glorious years then snuffed it.

JP dwindled through the first summer here.
