Roses - rooting

Hi everyone.

I'm very new here image

I decided to write because I got beautiful, cut roses and some of them got like new stems with new leafs. I started wondering, if I put them in aspirin/root hormone solution they would start rooting. (I tried to read something online and lots of advice were about aspirin solution?)

How do I prepare these stems for that? Any tips?

Thanks for your time!

  • Now is the best time to root roses in water. You are right, a little bit of aspirin helps rooting. it should take about 2-3 weeks, so you need to replace the water every other day. You only need to have the bottom 2 inches in water.

  • I cut my roses into pencil size lengths dip them in rooting powder then put them in a deep pot so only about inch or 2 is above the surface. Water then either leave in cool greenhouse or in a sheltered position. I also put them straight into the ground but have more success with a pot. Leave in pot for about a month/ 6 weeks  until you see some growth. Cuttings in the ground outside take longer probably 2 or 3 months. Even if they look dead leave them alone sometimes I have waited  6 months. I took my wedding bouquet apart last July and put about 20 rose stems in the border. Noticed this week that about half have new shoots!

  • I wouldn't bother. These are specialist long-stemmed roses grown in East Africa for the cut-flower market. I think you're wasting your time trying to root them on here.

  • Thank you all from the responses! So nice of you! Well, I think I cannot anyway propagate these roses I have because I noticed they started "drying" from the cut up, so I think they will not root...

  • I  would cut the end off and stick them in. The root will come from a growth point not the base anyway so you still may be lucky.
