Thank you everyone. We noticed them from quite a distance because they were literally glowing in the sun so we just had to go and investigate. I had my camera because we were out watching my grandaughter having a dressage lesson and I'd been filming her.
Karen (daughter) says she has a patch which has recently 'appeared' on the bank beside their horse schooling paddock at home. Think I'll pop round later with my trowel

They are eranthis hyemalis, often called yellow aconites though they aren't!
