Which shrubs look good with Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile'? (mock orange)

Can anyone suggest a couple of shrubs that go really well with Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile' (the compact form of mock orange)? Ideally also evergreen to provide structure in winter - although I’m open to any suggestions at this stage!

I have a rectangular border separating one end of the patio from lawn behind it (c. 3m long x 1.3 m wide). I would like to plant a couple of shrubs alongside the philadelphus with a screening effect that divides patio from lawn and makes it feel like a nice and cosy corner. However, as I’m a bit of a newbie I am stuck for ideas as to which other shrubs work well with the philadelphus. If any of you have a mock orange in your own garden what have you planted with it? The border faces in a south-easterly direction so gets plenty of sun. Any suggestions much appreciated! Thanks

depends on the height you're looking for, maybe something purple to pick up the colour in the throat of the Philadelphus,

Berberis , although prickly ,Phsocarpus Diablo is a great thing if you've room,  or maybe Pittosporum Tom Thumb if you'd like something smaller?

    Devon.
  • Great suggestions - I hadn't thought of looking at purple/red-leaved shrubs but that sounds like a great idea so am going to look into these. Many thanks image
