build a bear

With everyone on the way to feeling better and the majority of health problems being answered I have found myself yet another hobby  ( sort of offered to make clothes for  "build a bear " ) !  imageimage

For her birthday Granddaughter was given a voucher for the store , but the bear was going to cost four times the value of the voucher by the time she had finished. I  suggested to granddaughter that we make the bear some outfits together .she jumped at itimage .

But I now realise.........where have these days gone , where do I get remnants ? My first thought was to look on the web . Does any forum members buy from it , and  I wondered if anyone can recommend any in particular please.

Somehow I'm not very hope full , when I phoned the few remaining fabric  shops they didn't do anything like that now but pointed out that I could buy the material by the half metre to mix and match but this isn't what I had in mind.

Maybe you could use old clothes? X

  • Charity shops are full of clothes that you can cut up and use to make things  image

Also try your local market - the one in Norwich has a fabric stall that sends 'ends of rolls' etc.

And the Norwich John Lewis often has scraps and remnants in the upholstery fabric section and also in the knitting and sewing craft department.

  • As Beaus Mum suggested, you can make the bears clothes from something like an old pair of jeans. Bears look brill in shabby chic denim dungarees and checkered shirts or knitted sweaters. Then you could check out the clothes in charity shops. I know somebody who uses them to turn them into clothes for dolls. If you can crochet, you could crochet a straw hat (make sure that one has gaps for the ears. Check hobbycraft, they may stock the sort of material you could use for that.

I suggest cloths from charity shops or friends.  Even have a look around your closet?  Or what about your granddaughters clothing she's outgrown?  What a great way to preserve a favorite t-shirt or dress.

Why not try your local Freecycle group - I have given away loads of oddments, buttons etc for exactly your sort of purpose.  Type into the internet the word freecycle and the name of your area.  People give away everything for free but the recipient has to collect it themselves.

I have a build a bear, it was a gift. When I was browsing the shop I saw the shoes my bear wears. The shoes alone were about £19.99. I didn't dare look how much the rest of the outfit was. Baby clothes is a great option. You can always customise them if you want.

My sister collects troll dolls. She asked to sew some clothes for them.  I did a whole wardrobe for one about 1.5 inches big. Never ever again.

Point taken Lunaria, I won't encourage her to go troll. But if she does I shall advise her to buy her own clothes or put on her wish list !image

In build a bear store :  The things are very expensive and by what I've seen not all that well finished off.the little  top the bear has on is fraying inside already and she only got it this afternoon! . And where I will sew the sequins on by hand these are only sewn on and a bit tacky at that.

  • granma, you may enjoy watching this. The young lady explains in three videos how to make build a bear clothes:

  • If you are good with a needle, I have some jeans that need new pockets.

I can only sew skin properly...
