Moving roses

I will be moving house at the end of March and want to take some roses with me. Hankey Pankey (3yrs old) Ballerina, Princess Diana and a climber. Last 3 are 1 year old. I can't leave it until moving day to dig them up. A friend suggests pruning first (buds are now forming)   How far in advance can I dig them up and what other tips would you guys suggest?  The climber hasn't started climbing yet. Thanks.

I would prune them, dig them up, plant them in large pots as soon as possible. End of March will be a bit late to dig them up anyway. Then treat them as pot grown roses until you are ready to plant them in the new house. Don't forget to keep them watered and to feed them in March.

Yes, I would do exactly same as B-L.

Ooh! This is what i was trying to do at the weekend. Two roses in my garden that have been there a long time. Tried to dig them out but couldn't physically do it. I'm wondering about taking cuttings instead. I really don't want to lose them
  • Will the new owners be expecting these roses to be there when they move in? You should have an agreement with them - after all, they are buying the garden as well as the house.

  • Yes I have informed them that I will be taking some plants (they are buying it to let)

When I moved from my previous property I took about 3 plants as didn't want to 'push it'  (the new buyer wasn't really a gardener. when I visited some months later nearly all the shrubs etc had been dug up and discarded as he had gone 'minimalist!'  Quite infuriating!
