Chicken poo and straw

I have a large quantity of the above. What is the best way to use it? Should I just bung it in a darlek on its own and leave it. What about straight onto beds? Or should I mix it with something else in a darlek?

Would chicken poo and sawdust be used in the same way or woudl that need to eb treated differently?

Would any of this be preferable to horse manure?

Basically which poo is best horse or chicken? lol!

    Horse is best.

Chicken manure will burn plants if not thoroughly composted. It makes a good activator for the compost heap, mixed up with grass cuttings, shreddings and veg peelings. If it smells at all it is not composted enough.

  • So I should store the chicken poo plus straw until I can mix it with the grass cuttings?

  • I'd stack it next to the compost bin and then add it in layers when adding lawn mowings, veg peelings etc.  image

  • Hmm I will have an empty chicken feed bag, compost bag, wood chip bag and straw bag by the end of the week, I could store it in them and move it across as needed?

I'd get one of those builders' dumpy sacks to store it and, as said, add it in stages.

I would add it to the compost as the chickens are cleaned out. Layer it with shredded paper (at this time of the year there won't be too much else) and vegetable waste. If you use it too soon it will burn the plants and it won't rot down well in enclosed bags.
  • Chicken manure is too strong, it will burn plants as previously said. The chicken pellets you can buy have been "knocked back" in strength; clematis are gross feeders and chicken manure is especially recommended (by Fisks). Avoid any manure that is sawdust based, it is too new and will leach elements from the soil as it breaks down; paper-based stuff is best, but I'd still leave it for a year to break down.
