deliberate or not

last october i planted green leylandii round my garden making sure they only came half way up my garden well away from my house and my neighbours houses. i noticed yesterday the ones i planted on one side was a yellowish brownish colour while the others i planted on the other side and the back are a healthy green. i am now wondering if my neighbours dad (who is a nasty bit of work) has sprayed something on them as there is only a chicken wire type fence between that property and me. the underside of these leylandi is still green which i find strange. he moved in with his daughter for a few months about a week after i had planted them. what do you think?

Unless you saw him doing something, your only remedy is to re-plant.

I'm sorry but in my view planting Leylandii is almost an aggressive act unless you really do intend to look after them.
  • We have leylandi at the bottom of our garden; consisting of one solid hedge about 4m in length and 3m in height, and several severely butchered stumps.  It must have been planted by the previous owner, who then, presumably, had a change of heart, started butchering the poor old thing and planted bay in front of it. Maybe the long term plan was to allow the bay to gain some height and then remove the leylandi to avoid any conflict with the neighbours.

  • It may be very innocent. One side of the garden may be more sheltered than the other (less wind burn), one side may be much drier and the other wetter etc etc. There is also a disease spread that affects conifers. Post a pic of the yellowing and we can advise.

Generally speaking anything spread like a herbicide will kill the plant root up and happen quickly.

Do the neighbours have pets? A dog regularly peeing against it through the chicken wire fence could cause it to yellow.

  • If my neighbour planted leylandii near to my boundary fence I would hope that it didn't thrive either in fact I suspect that it wouldn't.

My neighbour has one tree down the bottom of their garden. It blocks the light to my greenhouse. Stupid thing! No place for it a residential garden
  • Annette,

Do you happen to know if your neighbour's dad reads this forum?

  • lol,@ Joe

  • I asked my neighbour before planting them as its her side boundary, her fence blew down the other year but even after offering to pay half for a new fence the poor lady still couldn't afford it so we both agreed a leyandii hedge which I am going to keep at only 5 ft high would be a good idea. i'll try and post pic I just the other side of the branches are still green.just tried clicking on box but theres nothing under my computer to click on to post the pic.
