Help

My daughter is getting married in early June next year.

I would love to grow some flowers for the wedding; I grow mainly veg/fruit.

I have an allotment and an unheated green house, but never have many flowers in early June.  Any colours, although the theme is Blue/white, fairly mild in Devon, I could ‘practice’ this year.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

June can be awkward, too early for bedding plants and spring flowers going over, but good for roses. But what about violas? I plant out plug plants in autumn, in the flower beds and pots around the house and they are still in full flower in June, feel sad at having to dig up the ones in pots to plant the summer bedding. Or you could grow them in pretty pots to put on tables as pot plants. A friend of mine did that and then gave them to the guests as presents afterwards on their way out.

Here a photo of mine last year in mid June. first one 18th second 22nd.

There are Sweet Williams, Lupins, Delphiniums, Foxgloves, Aconitum (best not for a wedding!!!) Campanula, Aquilegia, Allium.

There aren't many annuals in bloom this early and if you want the Spring flowers such as Delphiniums, you would need to buy seeds or plants this year for flowering next.

You could try some pansies in pretty pots, grow from seed late this summer ready for next June

  • You should be able to get some annual larkspur flowering in early June and they're lovely for cut flowers.  You can get them in lovely shades of blue and white and cream and different heights too.  I'd grow some this spring to practice for timing - sow in fortnightly succession so that whatever the weather you'll have some just perfect for the Big Day! image

  • Thanks for the ideas which I will use,

    Pleased of any more,

  • This was me last year! Daughter's wedding at the end of May,  blue and white colouurs required. The main problem was that most 'blue'  flowers are a bit on the lilac side.

I decided to go for lobelia in pots, for table decorations. Early in spring I bought 3 trays of white, light blue and dark blue lobelia. I potted these on and eventually planted 1of each colour in 6-inch pots. I fed and tended them on our patio, and by the wedding date they were just right. The pots were placed in home-made baskets, which gave a cottagey, homespun look. We tucked a balloon weight into each pot and attached 3 helium balloons to each one, so the balloons came up out of the flowers. At the end we gave them away to key guests or people who had helped at the wedding.

We didn't do our own bouquets or any cut flowers, as we travelled to the area a few days before the event.

We made all the buttonholes and corsages, which is not difficult. A bunch of cream rosebuds from a supermarket, a bunch of cornflowers, garden greenery and some blue and white ribbons gave us lots of scope.

    Good luck!
