Growing potatoes in bags

I am attempting potatoes in bags this year. What depth do you plant yours to if using bags? My friend told to keep adding soil to encourage more growth. Hopefully it will be successful image

  • just put a couple of inches in the bottom of the bag as they do not grow down but up ,and only the up part produces potatoes so the higher the more crop.

  • Good luck..Its my first time growing potatos this year so I am doing some in bags and some in the ground so I can see which way is best for next year.

    Fingers crossed!

  • I grew in bags for the first time last year, all the advice I read suggested starting with a couple of inches of soil and as the shoots/leaves emerge add another layer of soil, repeat until almost at the top of the bag, this apparently mimics earthing up. I'm sure someone will correct me if I've got it wrong!!

  • My friend did this last year I however just put some sprouting ones from the kitchen in my veg patch, the yield was low as it was late and prob had been sprayed unlike seed potatoes so will try bags or tubs this year too, but with proper seed potatoes this time.

  • Many thanks all image The potatoes are currently chitting in the kitchen and I bought the bags yesterday and wondered what to do to get them ready. I've put some stones at the bottom for drainage and will now add just a bit of soil and they will be ready image
  • I used a spare dustbin last year, worked really well, so will be using that again this years plus a couple of bags image

I was given some proper potato grow bags 2 years ago. Did it exactly as Kelsbels describes (about 3 or 4 potatoes to each bag) and I had a surprisingly good harvest (whole fruit tray full of potatoes).

Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
  • I've got proper potato bags and was going to do three per bag image

I thought about using a spare dustbin but haven't got one at the moment, plus the bags will fold away easily enough for storage image

  • My next door neighbour uses soil, chicken pellets and shredded paper. Apparently, the shredded paper allows for less soil to be used and the yield is supposed better, as the potatoes have more space. I'll be growing pots in bags this year, also. Got some bags very cheap last year. Three pots per bag is about right, Minosgardener. At least that's what it says on the instructions.

I only grow in bags and a potato barrel don't have room in the garden. I use multi purpose compost some organic potato feed mixed in, I've never put drainage in the bottom as the bags have adequate holes. After 1st & 2nd earlies are harvested I refill the bag with the used compost add a bit more and more feed and sow late carrots. All have produced well image   End of the season sacks get emptied onto the flower beds.
